7 Reasons You Won’t Say No

blog_3I’m a big fan of the word no.  Without saying no, you never have the capacity to say yes.  No is a useful word.  If that’s so, why is it that you’re not willing to ever use this very useful word.  I think I might have found 7 reasons you don’t.

If you say no, no one will ever ask you again.

I know that one of the reasons I often say yes is that I’m scared of not being asked if I say no.  Once in a while this might even be a real concern.  At the same time, if you know what’s important in your life (the first thing you need to know) you can say yes or no based on your values.

If you say no, your sales will dry up.

If you own a business this might be a real concern for you.  The better question is, “If I say yes, could it cost me more than just saying no.”  When you do one off’s or worse yet doing work you really don’t know how to do you’re costing yourself money and reputation. 

If instead you only say yes to things you’re really good at, your reputation will grow and you’ll be more effective at what you do.  This allows you make more money.  Isn’t improving your reputation and making more money a good thing?

If you say no, someone will get mad at you.

I know you don’t want to disappoint anyone.  At the same time life is way too short to be doing things you really don’t have any interest in.  It’s not saying no that’s the problem.  It’s saying no with no explanation of why you can’t do what’s being asked.  A good explanation will usually go a long way as long as you take responsibility for the reasons you’re saying no.

If you say no, you might miss out on something cool.

I’ve done it and I bet you have also.  You’ve said yes to something just because you didn’t want to be left out.  You arrive at what you’ve said yes to and you ask yourself, “Why did I agree to this?”  Usually it’s because you didn’t want to be left out.  Sometimes being left out is the better choice for you to make.  What do you think?

If you say no, you’re being rude to the person who asked you.

I know you don’t want to be rude.  You believe if you say no, that’s what’s happening.  Instead if you can come up with an alternative you can solve the problem for both of you.  I try to always have a different solution when someone asks me for something and I say no.  Just saying no, can be rude.  If you combine no with another idea, it might not be.

If you say no, you’ll regret not saying yes.

This is going to happen.  It’s part of living in the world.  We make mistakes.  Most of the time when you say no, you’re not going to regret it.  In fact, just the opposite is going to happen.  You’re going to wonder why you haven’t said no more often.

Here’s the truth about saying no.

Saying yes is restrictive.  Saying no is not.  Saying no allows you to create room for doing the right things in your life. 

We are all way over committed in things we do.  If we learn to say no, we’ll be a little less committed and will have time for the things we really want to do.  You know, those things that add real value to your life.
