8 Things I Do For Clients

Posted by Alexa Prenovitz

JP_Full_SizedI have a dilemma. My dilemma is to explain what it actually is I do for you. I was recently speaking with a client and explained my problem to him. His comment was I do different things for different people so it might be impossible to explain what it is that I do. He makes a good point. I’m still going to try to explain what it is that I do.

I’m not for everyone.

This is a really important thing for me. I make you really think about what you want. I make you commit to becoming better at whatever it is you want to accomplish. I keep coming back (in a nice way) and remind you that you have a good reason for taking actions. I’m going to help you learn that change is your friend.

If any of these things don’t work for you, I’m not your guy. This isn’t a bad thing, it just is. I can’t be all things to all people and you don’t want an advisor who is. I only work with owners of private businesses. If you own a business, I can promise that I understand you, I understand your challenges, and I understand many of your goals. I know this because I’ve worked with hundreds of business owners and I’ve owned and operated several businesses.

I help you make wise decisions.

For me, this is the most important activity I provide. I like to see myself as your thinking partner. I like to think that asking good questions about the future helps you find a path to getting the outcome you want.

I have a method for helping you make wise decisions. I know that if we follow this system we’ll get a great result. If we skip steps, we’re likely going to have to circle back and start over again. We want to get it right the first time.

I help you figure out why.

You own the realm of why. It’s my job to help you find what your why is for whatever you do. When you discover a core reason for doing something you’ll find it easier to keep going when it gets tough and it always gets tough. Without a strong why it’ll be too easy for you to change directions. If you have a strong why, knowing what to do becomes easy. Without a strong why you’ll keep going from one idea to another. It’s just the way it works.

I help you look at your options.

I’ve been mindfully studying business strategy for smaller private companies over the past thirty-five years. I’ve tried lots of strategies along the way. Some of them work really well. Most were a total bomb. I can help you identify the ones that will likely have a positive effect in your business. I can help you integrate your business and your life. I don’t want to to separate, I want you to integrate. I’ve learned that once you know why, the actions you need to take become obvious.

I always collaborate with you.

I’m a big fan of collaboration. To me, collaboration means we work as a team. You’re the leader and my job is to help support you in achieving an outcome you want. To collaborate I have to listen well to what you want. I have to put my ego aside. I have to learn patience is always important when we’re working on something hard.

When the benefit is large enough I’ll help you collaborate with other advisors. We’ll work on how we can form a culture of collaboration in your company. You’ll find that collaboration pays big dividends. It helps everyone bring their entire brain to the party. Isn’t this what you want?

I believe simple is always better.

I’m not a big fan of MBA training. My problem with business schools and formal business training is that it’s often designed for big companies; Companies that have huge budgets and lots of people to implement things that need to be done. If you’re the right customer for me you’ll have little time for large initiatives. You’re going to want to know how to accomplish goals simply and easily. I find that simple is better than complicated. It’s why I never write a report longer than two pages and it’s why I think mind maps are the most effective way to communicate.

How I’ve learned what I know.

I’ve been reading at least a book a week for over thirty-five years. I’ve attended over sixty seminars and specialized trainings. I’ve taught over 300 companies strategic and financial management. I’ve owned and operated companies. I’ve made tons of mistakes and made a point of learning something useful from every one of them. The combination of mindful studies and operational experience help me bring interesting and full solutions to your issues.

I love what I do.

The reason I do what I do is because I love it. For me, working with owners of private businesses making their lives better is a hobby as well as a vocation. I started doing this long before I sold my first company. I did this long before I went into the wealth management business. Now I get to do it for a living. I do have the best job in the world.
