We all have heard about “bucket lists.” This is a list of things we want to do before we die.
This is something I would like to spend a few minutes chatting with you about today. I like to meditate on the statement, “before I die…” The … is the blank you get to fill in. It’s the part of the meditation where you get to focus on something that’s important in your life.
In the past I’ve written a lot about the concept of a gratitude practice. This is its first cousin. When you mediate on the things you want to do before you die, you’re focusing on the things important in your life. These are the things that will help make your life better.
Start with a list
The first thing I want you to do is to start with a list. This means you have to spend some time writing your list. I then want you to revisit this list at least once a month. You’ll find that when you do this some things get added to the list and if you’re really paying attention, you’ll take some things off the list.
The action of writing a list in the first place will help you focus on what’s important in your life and not just urgent. Are you willing to take this first step and write your list?
Write what the items on the list mean to you.
The next thing I want you to do is write what the list means to you. Why are these things important? Don’t be afraid to drill down on why they’re important and write several statements about this.
If you end up writing at least five reasons each is important, you’ll find that you get to some core reasons that something is important. There are even times that as you try to drill down, you’ll find some things on your list aren’t all that important.
Schedule all the things on the list.
When you have a compelling reason behind the items on your list, take some time and schedule when they’ll be done. It’s even OK to write that it will be years or even decades before you’ll get to do what’s on your list.
Some things on your list will be wishes today. You’ll find that when you write them down, have a compelling reason to do them and then schedule the time you will, you’ll get to almost all of them. When I do this, I’m always amazed at how fast the items on my list get accomplished.
Review your list at least once a month.
I can promise you the things on your list will change. I can promise you that if you don’t spend at least some time on a monthly basis reviewing and modifying your list, it’ll get stale quickly and become less useful in helping make your life better.
Why don’t you scroll down, leave a comment and let me know what you will do to have your list of what you will do before you die?
