4 Reasons Most Musical Groups Don’t Get It

MusicI recently had a chance to see Return to Forever at Humphrey’s by the Bay in San Diego.  I also stayed at the hotel, which allowed me to wander around while the band was setting up and going through their sound check.

During the sound check I took pictures and there was a person next to me who was recording it on his phone.  The band’s road manager came up to us and told us we couldn’t take pictures or record the band.

This seems to be guiding strategy of most bands.  It’s no wonder that many bands are having a hard time making it in today’s environment.  Here are some things that today’s music industry could learn from bands that allow both pictures and recording.

Pictures are a good thing to be shared.  The more pictures are put on the web, the more free publicity the band gets.  Who cares if the pictures are not the best, maybe a few people might get curious and want to learn more.

Make and sell recordings of every show.  We can take pictures of almost every event in our life to remember the event.  Most bands don’t bother to record their concerts and make them available to their fans.  I know that when I go to concerts that have recordings made, I will almost always buy a copy to remember the performance.

In this particular situation, I would have loved to have a live recording.  It was a great show.

Encourage sharing of your music.  Music is meant to be shared.  Most bands today make most of their money from live concerts, not recordings.  The more people who hear the music, the more fans might want to see the band play live.

Put up websites that create a tribe around the band.  Jam bands have community around them.  This started with the Grateful Dead and continues through the jam bands of today.  Bands that create tribes have staying power.   It’s staying power that brings sold out shows twenty and even thirty years after the band first becomes popular.

Brian Halligan and David Meerman Scott have written Marketing Secrets of the Grateful Dead.  I believe all bands should read this book and learn that creating free events and activities helps create community.  From community grows tribes that help maintain success for the band for many years.
