When you go after something great it helps you step outside your comfort zone. It’s true that when you go after something really big you get bigger at the same time.
Too often we play small ball. I know I’m guilty of it and I bet that you’re often there yourself. You might get lost in what your bigger purpose is by pursuing the day-to-day minutia that seems to take over our life.
Do you take time to think about what your really big goal is?
If I was to have a conversation and ask you what it is that you want to be remembered for do you have a good answer? This might be what your big goal really is. It’s what you want to be remembered for by those who were close to you while you were alive.
I’m not trying to be morbid here. I want you to think about what makes you great now. I want you to think about how you can expand on that greatness and deliver something to the world that’s memorable.
My own belief is that we all have something to contribute to the world. Through that contribution you’ll find that many good things come your way.
Do you ask yourself what specifically you’re doing that will get you to your big goal?
This is where self-awareness comes in. Are you honest with yourself? I bet you wouldn’t be surprised to learn that most of us aren’t. Most of us like to think that we’re doing great things but we never take action.
We think about what greatness is, or at least I do. Most of the time when I think about greatness I do it in the form of a daydream. Then every once in a while I actually decide to take advantage of the gifts that I have and move from daydreams to something that’s real and tangible.
Do you plan to move towards the thing that’s great?
I remember that when I was younger my father used to accuse me of being Walter Middy. You see Walter Middy was a fictional character that dreamed about doing great things but never actually got around to doing any of them.
I always resented it when my father used to call me that, but I have to admit he was right. I would dream, but not take action. When I became an adult (I don’t know whether I’ve fully gotten there or not) I started to take action.
My dreams might not be as big as they used to be, but I now take action towards a big goal in my life. Many of them have come to fruition. The reason is quite simple: I keep at it. I keep at it until I start getting results. If what I’m doing doesn’t work, I change how I approach an issue. What about you, do you keep at it?
Is your big goal about you or about how you want to live in the world?
For me, the big goal is living a good life. It’s how I live in the world. It’s who I decide to associate with and who I decide to do business with. Life is too short to spend a lot of time with people who keep score. I want to work with people who believe we do live in an expanding world where much is possible.
How you live your life is up to you. I find that most of the really big goals and big things we want in life is how we want to live in the world and how we want to be remembered. You can make a difference. It’s not easy and it’s not always obvious. If you spend some time looking at yourself without rose-colored glasses it might even become obvious.
