What Does Your Office Say About You?

Comfortable waiting room resized 600I have a few questions for you about your office.  Not just your own personal office but your office in general.  Most of the time our offices or workplaces are representative of who we are as people.  I bet this is true for you.  If you own the company you’re going to want to think a little deeper about what your office represents.

What do you want your office to say?

If It Works Does It Make It Right?

pop upsI have a private war going on.  It’s aimed at pop-ups in websites that ask you to do something.  It’s a private war and one I’m pretty sure I won’t be winning.  I find pop-ups obnoxious and have had some interesting experiences with owners of those sites.

A personal story.

Are You Ready For Tomorrow?

future resized 600Do you have the ability to think about tomorrow?  I’m not referring to what you’re going to eat or what you’re going to do.  I’m talking about what your business will look like and whether it will continue to be viable.

Let me tell you my story.

Do You Do The Right Things Right?

right thing right wayYou know that you need to do the right things, and you know that you need to do things right.  It even makes sense that you should do the right things right.  The hard part is doing it.

6 Lessons I Learned From Grateful Dead Concerts

gratefuldead logoIt’s no secret that I’ve been to way too many Grateful Dead concerts.  I started going to shows when I was 18 years old and continue doing so to this day.  I might be too old to continue doing this but old habits die hard.

There have been a bunch of books written about The Dead and the influence they’ve had on all sorts of lives.  There are even at least two books on the business practices of the band.  I thought I would add to that some of the lessons I learned from them over the last 42 years.

Are You A Solepreneur?

solopreneur resized 600If you read the business press you might think that there is only one type of business.  I find the reality is much different.  In the private business world where 99.99% of us live, there are four types of business that I’ve been able to identify.

I think that if you understand what type of business you are, you can identify some of the main challenges you’re likely to have.  If you want to grow your business you might be able to figure out what the challenges are to make it to the next step.

Are You Having Fun Yet?

Positive outlook resized 600No, this is not a sarcastic question; it’s a real one.  If you’re not having fun, why not?  Is it because you don’t like your job?  Is it because the government is doing stuff you don’t like?  Is it because your health isn’t what you would like?

You get the idea.  There are lots of reasons that you might not be having fun now.  Here’s my question, “If you’re not having fun, why not?”  Really, this is a serious question and it’s something you probably have more control over than you thought.

4 Reasons You Need To Share Your Vision With Your Employees

Vision resized 600If you’re old enough you remember George H.W. Bush getting slammed in the press for not getting the “vision thing.”  For those of you who are too young to remember this issue, Bush senior had a problem talking about why he wanted to be President and what the country could expect.

He did get elected for a first time, but the lack of vision dogged him during his four years as President.  When Bill Clinton ran against him, he got the vision thing and was able to communicate it to the country.  This was one of the main issues that brought President Bush down.  He didn’t get the “vision thing.”

Why I Love Tribes

connection resized 600I find that I use the term tribe more and more often these days.  I’m a big believer that words have meaning and different words influence the way we think.  I know that when I hear the word tribe it has a different effect on my thought process than almost any synonym for the word tribe.

Occasionally I get asked isn’t a tribe just another word for an affinity group?  In one way the answer is yes, but for me they really are two different things.

Stop Doing Employee Reviews - Coaching

employee review resized 600I believe that one of the big problems smaller businesses have is they don’t have the resources that larger companies have.  This is especially true in the realm of performance reviews.

Have you ever asked yourself why do you do reviews and what do they accomplish?  I know that I have and in every business I’ve been involved in the review process has been tortuous and at best marginally useful.
