Moving into Retirement

Many of us look forward to retirement.  We finally are able  to slow down and concentrate on the things we enjoy in life.  However, at the same time, some of us might have some concerns about  how we’re going to fill the time in retirement that we used to fill with work.

If we’ve done a good job of saving, we will reach retirement with few money worries.  If we haven’t, we might find that retirement is coming at us like a freight train. We realize there is no way  we can even think about retiring, even though the company we work for has a mandatory retirement age.

Everyone faces retirement with different expectations, fears and hopes. You also might feel overwhelmed by the prospect of retiring because so many choices are ahead of you.  We believe that a major part of our job for Clients facing retirement is to help you narrow your choices, making it easier for you to make a decision. If we do our job well, we will have helped make your life better by making it easier for you to focus on what’s important. Having a menu of choices that are possible for your own particular situation makes it less confusing.

We believe retirement planning should consist of financial planning as well as time planning.  We want to help you know what your financial resources are and how they  can be used.  At the same time, we want to help you understand what your options are for the activities you may have postponed during your career.

Some of the retirement planning areas we concentrate on are:

  • Creating financial plans before you actually retire.
  • Understanding what are your sources of  income  after retirement.
  • Working with the appropriate professionals to help you understand what your health care options are.
  • Helping you find groups that have mutual or similar interests as yours in retirement.
  • Helping you decide the best location in which to live.
  • Working with you and your tax professional to minimize taxes while in retirement.
  • Making sure that your risk factors are discussed. (death, disability and critical illness)

As with all the planning we do with Clients, our goal is to make your life better.  Activities around retirement planning can be either joyful or  stressful.  We often find that helping you reduce the choices you have to make will reduce stress. This, in turn makes the entire retirement planning process more fun.
