I’ve always thought that setting an appropriate tone in a company is really important.  To set a tone you have to understand and apply mission, vision, values and goals in a way that communicates what your company is about to all the stakeholders your company has.

I’ve written about mission a great deal and think this is where all businesses need to start.  A good mission statement must be short (no more than ten words) and be able to be answered with a yes or no answer.  For example, the mission of my firm is to make our Client’s lives better.  We can get an answer that is a yes or no and is easily communicated to all the stakeholders we have in our business.

Making a company mission statement real usually revolves around putting together activities that support and move your company mission forward.  This is usually done through having goals in place that support your mission.

There are several mistakes I see made when people try to implement goals that are strategic in their company.  Some of these mistakes are:

Not seeing how goals that are established tie into the company mission.

Having too many goals in place

At the most a company should work on three goals at one time.  Each part of the company should have mini goals that support the larger goal for the company.

There is no measurement system in place to see how the company is doing on their goals

For a goal to be real, it must be measurable, have a time frame and have an evidence procedure for when it’s been accomplished.  Many companies are missing at least one of these three items and in many cases all three of them.  A goal is not an idea; it must be a measurable activity that is hopefully strategic in nature.

The goal is not strategic

Many goals are tactical and not strategic.  This means the goal will not be based on mission or vision.  You always want to combine your goals with strategic initiatives that help your company move towards improving performance that supports your company’s mission.
