I first heard this statement from Rob Slee.  He was referring to private business owners always being one call from being out of business.  We all have the potential for the phone call we dread.  Some of them might be:

A call that says you’ve just had a customer get seriously ill because of a faulty product.

Your child is in the military and a call comes that says he or she has died.

You get a phone call from your doctor saying you have cancer.

Are these phone calls random things that happen?  Are there things you can do to help make them less severe if they do happen?

The examples above are things I’ve experienced or could experience.  I had a company that had a food borne illness break out.  I’ve had a serious bout with cancer.  My son is in the military.  He’s on his way to Afghanistan and I’m scared to death that call might come.

The good news is that if the phone call comes, you can have a plan for what you’re going to do. 

We had a plan for our food borne illness.  Everyone was taken care of, we didn’t lose any accounts and I was proud of how we handled a huge problem.

I was fortunate that my wife became my caregiver.  I’m not sure that I would be here today had she not done everything she could to keep me alive.

Then there are the problems that can’t be solved and only time can heal, if then.  Those are when you need friends, family and a support system that can help and keep you afloat.

The key with making it through the disaster call is to have a support system.  Part of this system is your mindset and part is having people around who can help.

The most important of all might be a willingness to ask for support.  Unless you’re willing to ask for support, those great potential support people may never appear.  Asking for help requires that we be vulnerable.  In that vulnerability is where great things can happen and healing can begin.
