In the early 80’s I took a variety of seminars that helped me smooth out some of my rough edges.  These programs helped me realize there is more in the world than me.  One of the best was a program that was put together by Marshall Thurber called Money and You.

In this program Marshall introduced a poem that has been above my desk for almost thirty years.  I look at and read this poem at least once a week.  Every time I read it I’m reminded that starting is often the most important ingredient in success.

Here’s the poem.  I hope you enjoy it and get some value from it.

Until one is committed

there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back,

always ineffectiveness.

Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation)

there is one elementary truth,

the ignorance of which kills countless ideas

and splendid plans:

that the moment one definitely commits oneself,

then providence moves too.

All sorts of things occur to help one

that would otherwise never have occurred.

A whole stream of events issues from the decision,

raising in ones favor all manner

of unforeseen incidents and meetings and

material assistance,

which no man could have dreamt

would have come his way.

I have learned a deep respect

for one of Goethes couplets:

“Whatever you can do, or dream you can ... begin it.  Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.”

So what are the dreams you have?  Are you willing to take action to find the genius, power and magic in your life?
