I think everyone gets tired of their job from time to time.  Whether it’s a nasty customer, an employee who’s driving you crazy, or having to do a task that you just hate; we all have times we would rather by anywhere but at work.

It’s not the times that come every once in a while that I worry about.  It’s when day after day you feel like things are bad and getting worse.  When you are about to throw in the towel it might be time to see if you’re burned out. 

Here are some things I think you should look at if you’re feeling at the end of your rope:

Are you doing things outside your unique ability?  We all have activities that we’re great at.  I call these activities being in the zone.  Often when we’re doing things we’re uniquely good at time flies by and we’re just having a great time.

Then there are those times where we absolutely dread having to do something that we know we have to do.  Many times these activities drag us outside our core competencies. 

A good thing to do is to look and see how much energy you have for different activities.  We all have a certain amount of energy units for different activities.  A great instrument to measure those energy units is the Kolbe Index. www.kolbe.com

This instrument will help you learn what you have energy for and where you have little energy.  Once you learn this, look at how you spend your time.  If you’re spending too much time in areas where you have little energy, you could be feeling burned out.

You’re doing things you don’t feel are important.  All jobs and businesses have activities that must be done.  When we spend too much on these sorts of things we might feel burned out.  Understanding what your personal mission is and how your activities fit into this mission can help you feel energized while going through your day.

Too many of us live our life and feel bored or worse yet taken advantage of.  Having a clear idea of what’s important in our life can help us take steps to feel useful when we make the world a better place.

You are working in an environment with low ethics.  I believe we have an ethical crisis in our country.  Too many organizations do things that aren’t good for society.  Their excuse is that they must think about their shareholders.  When I hear these types of excuses for behavior it often isn’t for the shareholders but the senior managers of a company.

If you’re working for an unethical organization it’s time to leave.  Yes, I know you have to make a living, but plan to leave and work towards doing so.  It’ll help with how you feel about yourself and you’ll feel less burned out.
