We all have them: strategies that form how we live in the world.  Many of us don’t have a clear idea of what others’ strategies are, nor do we even know what our own strategies are.  I believe this is a mistake.

I believe that starting with your own strategies is key.  You likely have an idea about what they are, but have you ever really thought about what makes you tick?  Once you understand your own strategies then you can move to understanding others.  This will help you communicate better and avoid frustration when dealing with others.

Are you a towards or away from person?  If someone tells you all the good things that are going to happen do you get excited (a towards strategy)?  Or do you need to be scared into action (an away from strategy)?  I find that most people lean towards one side or the other. 

If someone has a towards strategy you will only get their interest if they know what the reward is.  If someone has an away from strategy they won’t move unless they know there will be real pain if they don’t move.  This basic understanding of motivations is important in helping you not have a disconnect with people you’re dealing with.

What about energy units?  I love the Kolbe Index.  This instrument helps us measure energy units that we have.  We sometimes ask people to do take activities on they just don’t have much energy for.  When this happens we can easily be disappointed with the results.

We tend to concentrate our activities towards things we have lots of energy to accomplish.  I call this the will do part of life.  What are the activities that we are enthusiastically willing to do?  Much of the time these activities are things we naturally have energy to accomplish.

Do we really have hard wired behavior?  Whether we are or not, we definitely have preferences for how we live in the world.  I’ve used the DISC instrument for years to help me understand the preferences of others and myself.  I find this instrument helps me understand what the preferences are for people I’m working with.

I use different communication skills depending on how people prefer to work.  This fits in with my belief that communication is the responsibility of the person talking, not the person listening.  Understanding the belief systems of others, knowing how much energy they have for different activities, and knowing preferences for living in the world can help me communicate better.  What about you?
