A lot of the time new equals change. New could also be a different way of looking at something. It could be finding something funny that you never noticed before. It even could be a different way of practicing.
New means making mistakes.
Do you remember when you first started to ride a bike? It took you a couple of times before you got it right. You might even have fallen off a few times and skinned your knees.
The one thing that’s probably true, learning to ride a bike meant making mistakes. I bet that is true with anything you’ve ever done that’s new. At first it felt awkward. Eventually as you got better the awkwardness went away. Once you learned that new thing you might have wondered what you were so worried about in the first place.
The first step with new is to be willing to make mistakes and learn from them. It’s OK to even look a little silly. Really, it won’t hurt. I promise.
New means considering a different way.
If new means that you’ll consider a better way you’re going to have to ask yourself some questions. You’ll have to ask whether the inconvenience of learning something new is worth the hassle.
As we get older it just gets hard to learn a new way. We’re used to what we’ve been doing in the past. We really don’t want to learn something new. It’s comfortable to do things the way we’ve always done them. You should ask yourself whether the old way serves you well. If the answer is no, you will have to consider a different way and it might just be a little uncomfortable for you.
New is about being humble and humbled.
I bet you don’t want to look foolish. Part of the reason you’re not interested in learning something new is that you don’t want to be humbled. You might not even want to be humble.
You’re probably pretty good at how you do things right now. If you try to learn a new skill or change how you do things you’re going to make mistakes. If you make mistakes and you’re like me, you’ll be humbled. Learning from scratch is hard work. It’s all part of being open to new things. Humble and humbled is just part of the deal.
New is really trusting yourself.
Are you willing to laugh at yourself? Learning new stuff can be fun, especially when you don’t take yourself and the new skill too seriously. In my own case learning something new is usually fun. That is once I get over the embarrassment of being really awkward.
It’s all about having a self worth where you’re willing to be a little foolish. My son is really good at this. He’s more than willing to be foolish when learning something new. I think it’s why he picks up new skills so easily. He just doesn’t care what he looks like or what others think. I think that’s a good lesson for all of us to learn.
And yes, new is about change.
I bet you’ve figured this out by now. Being open to new things is all about change. If you’re going to be successful at picking up new things you’re going to look foolish, you’re going to make mistakes, and you’re even going to be humbled. It’s part of the deal. If you want to learn something new you’re going to have to get over yourself.
I know I used to have a hard time with this. Now it’s not as much an issue. What about you? Are you willing to be just a little foolish?
